The Ultimate Procrastinator: Happy 2012!!! (...4 Days In)

O-M-G! I am beyond disbelief that it is 2012! I'm officially 10 years out of high school and certainly not where I pictured myself, as a naive eighteen year old (definitely not a bad thing).  I have a feeling that 2012 is going to be pivotal and positive!  I am not a big fan of resolutions because, like the other 99% of the population, I have a difficult time keeping them.  My "goal" for this year are to refocus on my little, insignificant blog and take it more seriously (i.e. consistent weekly posts, custom domain name, emphasis on proper photography, utilizing social media to the fullest).

That being said, I'd like to show you a little recap of my holiday season....
  • It started with our beautiful gold and silver tree!  This was our first Christmas in the new house and we became all too aware of the fact that we are grown ups now.

Where are all the presents?

Silver and Gold!

  •  Football...lots and lots of football (and several a few tears)

Blue Crew Tailgate

  • I ate some insanely good food that, to my dismay, is starting to pop up in undesired places.  I need to remember: JAMAICA in August, JAMAICA in August, JAMAICA IN AUGUST!
Girls' Night Out at...
Sapporo in Castleton!
    Date night hibachi at...
Kabuto's on the south side
- Thanks to my awesome brother and sister-in-law's Christmas gift card, D and I had a kick ass meal at Bonefish Grill off of 86th Street.  Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Asian Glazed Sea bass, Filet Mignon & Crab cakes (my mouth is watering just thinking about it)

- I also recently tried 10-01 in Broad Ripple with *Fefe.  I love the downstairs lounge/bar.  I only nibbled on soup and salad and tried one of their seasonal ambers.  I'm definitely looking forward to returning to trial their full menu and beer list.

- FYI Devour Downtown starts in 5 days!!!
  • And most importantly, I had such an amazing time immersing myself with my wonderful family...
My adorable niece
My grandmother trying desperately to hold up my niece
My brother and beautiful mother
My wild man of a nephew

...and friends

Finally feeling back to normal after the Indy 500

This year marked the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.  To be honest, I am not a racing fan but I do love history and any excuse to have fun over a lot a couple adult beverages with friends.  The Indy 500 is the largest event held here in Indiana that attracts almost a half a million people to the West side of town.  I live only about 5 or so miles from the Speedway and had Neil Carr Van Services (317-414-6842) pick myself and my friend, Lindsey, up around 7:45am.  It took us 3.5 hours to get there but just in time for the opening ceremonies:  the National Anthem performed by Kelly Clarkson, Seal, David Foster; God Bless American sung by Florence Henderson; the fly over from the B12 Stealth Bomber (awesome!); the introductory laps;er and of course, Jim Nabors.  It was a very nostalgic moment that brought chills to myself and many of my friends.  The crowd chanted USA! USA! USA! and it was just such a special time to be at the track.

I met up with my friend, Macy, who was in town from California, and her friends from Logansport.  When the drivers made their first official lap past Turn 3 (where we were stationed) they shook and sprayed their beers wildly in the air.  Lindsey and I stood from a far distance.

Celebratory Beer Spraying to kick off the Race

Macy got soaked!
I decided to channel my inner derby girl with my attire but it paid off in the long run because at the end of the day, I wasn't fried and didn't have the annoying tan lines.
Me!

Here's a sample of the hilarious attire seen out in the infield....

I wish I had taken more pics because there were plenty of awesomely crazy looking people.  I met up with a few more friends before the end.

What I'm Cooking: Cake Balls...A Love Affair

Several months ago Fefe's introduced me to some cake balls her sister had made and it truly was --- love at first bite!!!  They are cake and icing encapsulated in a chocolate-y coating.  The hardened coat of chocolate locks in the moisture and it is just heavenly.  Since then, we have been engaging in this secret romance.  Our paths cross occasionally and I can't get enough.  They are one of few guilty pleasures I indulge in while on my fairly restrictive eating regiment.  I had been contemplating taking a stab at making my own ooey, gooey, oh-so delectable cake balls after gaining some tips on the web.  Sounded simple enough.  I had all the ingredients already so when a girls' "catch up" luncheon was on the agenda, I thought that this would be great opportunity to flex my housewife-in-training muscles.

Here's what I came up with:
Not the prettiest things but I'll tell you why when you read on....
Let me start at the very beginning....

1) Take a box of store bought cake mix and cook it as directed.

2) Once cake is fully baked, crumble completely in a mixing bowl and let it cool to room temperature.

3) Mix the crumbled cake with 3/4 can of store-bought icing (I chose Cream Cheese flavored).  I used the whole can which I think was just too much.  I used an electric beater on low to stir and mix evenly.

4) Set the icing-cake mixture in the freezer for at least 1 hour to let firm up.

5) Take the mix out of the freezer and roll into balls, placing them on wax paper over a cookie tray .  I made them about the size of a medium meatball.  I then stuck the tray and cake balls back in the freezer  and left them there overnight.

6) When I came back to them, they were firm but not rock hard which was perfect for sticking a toothpick in to dip in the dark chocolate.

7) I brought water to a boil in a pot.  Then, I put the dark chocolate in a glass bowl and reduced the temp.  The chocolate needed constant stirring and attention but started to melt fairly quickly.  I made the mistake of adding splashes of soy milk to soften the chocolate up.  This led to the chocolate not re-hardening to it's original state, therefore, they turned out more like goo balls than the bon-bon like cake balls i've tried.  Lesson learned!  I also ended up using a large pot of water than pictured below but you get the point.
8) I topped half the cake balls with a generous sprinkling of Trader Joe's English Toffee (a gift from my Mama) that I used a hammer to crush up and left the other half plain.  Once they were all coated in chocolate, I set them back in the freezer until they were ready to go.

They didn't transfer to the glass dish well
So it wasn't a total disaster but I made some amateur mistakes.  I kept referring to them as poo balls which luckily didn't detour people from eating them.  They were even more squishy after sitting out on a counter for a few hours.  Definitely, don't add milk to the chocolate.

The next time around, I am going to use less icing and of course, no milk.  I'm also going to be more adventurous with the cake, icing and coating flavors.  These are wonderful for luncheons, bridal showers, gifts, etc.  Stay tuned for Cake Balls...A Love Affair 2!!!

If you've tried these before, what flavors did you use?

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Dear Mom:

You are the best mother a girl could ask for.  I admire everything about you: your class, your professionalism, your unwavering love for your family.  You are such a blessing in my life and the best part is that you chose me or maybe it was divine intervention.

Love,

Your daughter

What I’m Eating: Adobo Grill (downtown)

Not many places that I eat at create a special, nostalgic moment from the minute I step inside but Adobo Grill did just that.  Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year: CINCO DE MAYO!  I’m not going to pretend I know the history of the Mexican holiday.  To me, it’s just a great reason to meet up with friends to enjoy Mexican food and of course, margaritas!

From August 2005 to May 2007, I lived in Atlanta, Georgia and had the privilege of working at Sala: Sabor de Mexico (sadly, no longer open); an upscale, regional Mexican eatery nestled in the wonderful Virginia-Highland area.  I shared some of the best memories of my life with my coworkers and I learned so much about Mexican food and drinks.  I observed attention to detail and the importance of sourcing the freshest, most in-season, regional ingredients.  It truly was an enriching experience.
But in Indiana, I very rarely come across equal craftsmanship of Mexican food.  I dined at El Torito which is no longer in business, a few years back, but was not impressed.  I had always known Adobo Grill existed, I just had not made my way there; always electing to go for the cheaper, greasier Americanized, Mexican fare at Cancun or La Hacienda.  But my buddy Kelly (a fellow downtowner) suggested it and I jumped at the opportunity.

We got there about 40 minutes before our 8:15pm reservation hoping to grab a drink at the bar and perhaps get seated early but were weren’t thinking very clearly because it was jam packed (duh!).  No big deal, we ran across the street to Fogo de Chao for a cocktail.  I ordered a Caipirinha on the bartender’s recommendation.  He sold it as being a Mexican cocktail, in lieu of Cinco de Mayo, but I knew better.  It’s actually a traditional Brazilian drink made with Cachaça run, muddled limes and cane sugar.  Very tart and zesty!  D and Kelly went with a margarita on the rocks.  We had to basically chug them once we got them because before we knew it, it was 8:15.
Adobo Grill is a fairly large, two-story restaurant with a long main dining area and several other dining rooms that splintered off from the center.  The decor is festive, bright and traditional.  The environment just screams fiesta!  In honor of Cinco de Mayo, a mariachi band was rounding the restaurant.  It was pretty loud when they were nearby but I enjoyed the entertainment.

Very animated Mariachi ban

We were instantly greeted with a basket of warm tortilla chips and salsa.  The salsa was fantastic.  It is not the typical fresh salsa that most people’s palettes are used to.  Theirs has smoky, roasted chipotle flavors.  Its heat comes on more slowly and kinda creeps up on you.  We quickly ordered a round of house margaritas and guacamole.  The server placed our margarita glasses on the table (I prefer my margs up/D and Kelly went on-the-rocks) and aggressively mixed the ingredients in a large shaker then poured.  Kudos on the service detail.  This is something that Sala did and really enhances the diners’ food adventure.  The menu and website said that it is made tableside but unfortunately they prepared it around the corner and out of sight.  I attributed this to how crowded the place was and the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed.  No worries though because the guacamole was out of this world.  A tad bit salty but the avocado was perfectly ripe and hand muddled with garlic, jalapeno peppers, onion, tomato, cilantro and a squirt from a lime wedge.  We basically licked the lava rock bowl it was served in clean.

Maybe the best guacamole in Indy

The menu offers lots of wonderful choices that are prepared very traditionally like Oaxacan black mole and ceviches.  They use lots of regionally specific ingredients like huitlacoche and pasilla chilis.  I went with the Enchiladas de Marsicos (Seafood).  D went with the chicken enchiladas in a salsa verde.  Kelly chose the Tilapia a la Talla.  Our entrees came out in a timely fashion which was good because even after chips, salsa and guac, I was starving.  My (4) enchiladas were everything I was hoping for: cheesy, creamy, smoky.  The shrimp and tilapia was smothered in a corn and chipotle cream sauce and slices of grilled green peppers and onions then rolled in corn tortillas.  Melted cheese, guac, crema and pico de gallo were also sprinkled on top.  The corn in the sauce sweetened it but was balanced by the earthy roasted heat of the chipotle.  It reminded me of the seafood enchiladas that Sala served.  It also came with Mexican rice and black beans.  I was too focused on the entree to really analyze the sides.

Mariscos Enchiladas = delicioso!
Kelly enjoyed her dish.  It was a filet of tilapia marinated in adobo chili and simmered in a guajillo broth and served with escabeche (pickled veggies).  As I sort of suspected, D’s chicken enchiladas were a bit mediocre which I think is pretty typical of dishes in a salsa verde.  He said it was good but no fireworks.  The shredded chicken was in a tomato and chili sauce that was very mild and lacked seasoning.  I ended up asking for a to-go box and took my 2 leftover enchiladas with me.

I was sad that I didn’t leave any room for dessert but this just gives me a reason to return.  I am glad I got to dine here before we move away from Downtown later this summer.  I am definitely going to miss the urban environment.  Adobo Grill es muy beuno!

Mi amor & mi amiga!

The Verdict: Out of 5 stars
Location/Atmosphere: ***1/2 The decor and building is unique and beautiful but the lack of parking is a challenge.
Service: ***1/2 (our server was really just an order taker but it was the busiest day of the year so I won’t hold that against them.  Loved the margaritas shaken tableside and the Mariachi band)
Food: ****1/2 (2 out 3 people loved their entrees, guac was a star)

Will I eat there again: Si!

What I'm Eating: Thr3e Wise Men

The weather was supposed to be crummy so I was hoping that it would discourage the massive crowds but Thr3e Wise Men Brewery was jam packed.  D and I tried to go check out Broad Ripple's latest hot spot last weekend but were met with a wait that we weren't willing to do.  I knew eventually I'd get back in there and luckily I was right.  A few past coworkers wanted to meet up and catch up over dinner and drinks and coincidentally chose 3WM.

I got there before everyone else which gave me the opportunity to inconspicuously check out the surroundings.  The building is interesting: light wood, "rustic" interior, antlers on the wall, wood bar-height tables and picnic tables (used for shared seating), industrial loft-like piping, and an open view of their in house brewing vats. I bellied up to the bar and since it is a brewery, I had to have ONE.  I chose their seasonal Sanctaneous Hefeweizen.  It is a light to medium bodied German wheat brew.  There are hints of citrus and spice.  Me Likey!  The bartender also brought me a water served in a giant mason jar (I don't know what it is about mason jars that makes me smile).  My girlfriend ordered the Snow Bunny Blonde (the lightest beer on the menu).  There are plenty of other options to choose from as well as a wide selection of bottled beers, many local.

When the rest of the gang arrived, we were sat on the right side of one of the picnic tables.  The other half would eventually be sat with strangers which made for a bit of awkwardness.  I noticed iPads were at every table.  I was kind of confused as to what their purpose was other than to check your Facebook or post a new Tweet.  [Has the world really come to this where we can't go anywhere without feeling social media's presence?  I had already "checked in" on my phone.  Now there are table top distractions to pull us away from conversing with each other.]  I didn't see any other tables using theirs, either.

The sign outside does not indicate that 3WM is simply a pizza place.  I assumed it was going to have a variety of bar fare.  The menu does not have much selection.  There are apps, a pizza section and desserts.  They don't offer signature pizzas, instead just have it set up as a build-your-own.  Honestly, I was a bit disappointed.  Especially being familiar with Scotty's Brewhouse (their mothership restaurant) and their extensive menu.  Our server brought us a bucket of machine-popped popcorn that I had eyed from the bar.  Yummy and perfect for quieting my rumbling tummy.  She was very friendly and gave us our space to chitchat and order at our leisure.  She had a handheld device for order taking which was nice and probably helps to reduce errors.  The girls ordered the Goat Cheese and 3WM Marinara appetizer which is served with toasted bread pieces.  I wish that I could have tried it but I have a unshakable dislike for the flavor of goat cheese.  The girls seemed to enjoy it but one had tried to order some soft bread for the dip but they didn't offer any.

On to the pizza.  My friend CW and I split a medium pizza with roasted red peppers, spinach leaves and Italian sausage (which is locally sourced).  You gotta appreciate places that do their best to find local and fresh produce and meats.  When it finally hit the table, I was a bit stuffed from the popcorn but began to salivate when the aromas filled my nostrils.  A medium came with 8 fairly large slices.   3WM pizzas are flat bread style.  The crust was okay.  I would have liked a hint of flavor like garlic, Parmesan or butter.  They used the perfect amount of sauce that burst with fresh tomato flavor.  The 3 toppings were also fresh and went well together.  The cheese was melted well so that it didn't pull and detach the toppings from the base.  CW and I would've been fine with just a small pizza but she had left overs to take home which is always a plus.

Plenty of pizza for 2
The server brought us each our checks and boxes of Boston Baked Beans.  Strange but a nice touch.  I enjoyed a nice brew, stuffed my face with popcorn, pizza, and Boston baked beans; all for about $17, including tip.  I must say, not a bad night out, at all.

The Verdict: Out of 5 stars
Location/Atmosphere: ***** (Broad Ripple)
Service: **** (bartenders, servers and support staff were all friendly and attentive)

Food:***1/2 (in house brewed beers and locally sourced ingredients a plus but small, limited menu)
Will I eat there again: Yes

What I'm Drinking: Weekend Update:Part 2 - Places for great drinks and conversation

Friday and Saturday both involved quite a bit of drinking with my friends at various locations in the city; my liver and wallet are a bit upset with me.  Here are some places I visited:
  • Chatham Tap (downtown, 719 Mass Ave): small, neighborhood bar along Mass Ave. An English-style tavern with European Football memorabilia on all the walls.  Great beer selection and nice little outdoor patio.
Seasonal Bells Oberon
  •  Kilroys (downtown, 201 S. Meridian St.) Large, sports bar right along Meridian and across from Conseco Fieldhouse.  This is where I and most of my friends, sadly, watched the Colts lose to the Saints 2 seasons ago. It is a gigantic, non-smoking restaurant/bar with plenty of TVs and indoor & outdoor seating similarly fashioned like the original Kilroys in Bloomington.  It definitely has a college bar feeling with a massive chalkboard wall of shots.  Our server, my friend Ashley, was awesome (duh!!)!  We drank and my friends noshed on a BBQ Platter and App Sampler.
VI and "Bob D" (haha)
  •  Sahms Tavern (downtown, 433 N. Capitol) One of my fave spots downtown.  The newest of the Sahms restaurant group.  It is a bit swankier than their other neighborhood bar and grills on the north side.  It has a wonderful view of the city which you can enjoy inside or on their nice outdoor patio.  The staff is always prompt and friendly.  Say hi to my buddy, Marcus, if he's working.
  • Granite City (N Indpls, 150 W. 96th St.) D and I stopped here to say hello to our friend, Drew, who is a server (a quite hilarious one).  This is an American-fare restaurant and brewery.  D and I grabbed a beer each: he tried the American Wheat and I tried the Brother Benedict's Bock as well as a cup of their French Onion Soup (which was a recommended choice to go with my Bock).   The BB Bock was delicious; a medium body brew with hints of coffee and chocolate.  It definitely paired well with the saltiness of my soup and the melted, cheesy goodness.  Drew also let me try their Creamy Tomato Basil soup which was amazeballs!!  I was sad we didn't enjoy a full meal but we had other places to go and people to see.  Looking forward to trying their Sunday Bruch sometime soon.
Brother Benedict's Bock

French Onion Soup

  • Joe's Grille (Fishers, 11640 Brookschool Rd.) This bar is right at the corner of 116th St. and Brookschool Rd and has become the Cheers bar for many of my friends who live on the north side.  It is a small, quaint neighborhood bar with a separate area for pool, darts or video games like Golden Tee.  There is usually some sort of live music.  Saturday is Karaoke Night.  They serve typical bar fare food until late and offer daily drink specials.  This is the perfect spot for a mellow night away from the craziness of Broad Ripple or Dtown.

Hey I'm Crafty...sort of: Diaper Cake

Sorry the picture is so blurry.  I use my camera on my phone and the quality is terrible.

This is a project that I did almost a year ago but I was so proud of myself at the time.  I was hosting my best friend's baby shower and wanted to make something that would display well out on a table.  I saw something similar at my sister-in-law's baby shower and just loved it.  It was pretty easy to make but did require a lot of time and patience.    I bought a bulk amount of diapers (50, I think) from Walmart.  The first thing I did was individually roll them up tightly and secured them with tape so that they wouldn't come undone.  Then I just started arranging them from the inside to the outer layers and then repeated the same thing for each layer.  It was a bit tricky trying to corral them all up to tie the ribbon around the outside so that they would stay nice and compacted.  I placed a piece of circular cardboard so that the diapers wouldn't fall out of the bottom.  I sized it to matched the bottom layer of diapers and then used more ribbon to keep that in place.

First Friday: Carnival Night @ Wheeler Arts Center and the Shenanigans that followed

I am still trying to get used to the idea of taking pictures at all times so like a very bad blogger, I failed to take any pictures while attending First Friday at Wheeler Arts Center.  I also failed to write down artists' information including names.  Terrible.

The Wheeler Arts Center is such a cool place.  Not only is it aesthetically unique with high loft ceilings, exposed brick and industrial piping, it also houses an eclectic blend of tenants.  There is such a communal feeling and everyone is so warm and inviting.  The event was much more organized than the previous time I went.  Live DJs played music that could be heard throughout the building.  There were several open studios including my buddy Ben.  His unit was open to the public to introduce those who entered to indy Planet.  There were various mixed medias on display (and on sale) including lots of intriguing wall art, furniture , custom baby clothes designer even voodoo dolls.  To keep with the theme there were carnival style games, finger foods like popcorn and corn dogs.  One unit even offered fondue.  Just being there brings out your inner artist.  Hopefully people will post pics from the event and I will add them later.

After the event died down, we all decided to venture across the street to The Brass Ring (click here to read a previous post I wrote about how much I love that place).  We ordered a round of drinks and food.  I got the pork potstickers that I had been craving for months.  They steam them perfectly and serve a spicy ponzu sauce.  I also took a few bites of Ben and Kelly's Cajun Pizza.  Muh noshed on some enormous potato skins.  I enjoyed a extra dirty martini to wash down all the yummy goodness.

Muh chowing down
I didn't want to call it a night so I went to Taps and Dolls, near Union Station, with Muh and John.  It was my first time there and it was pretty lively when we arrived.  DJ Topspeed was spinning.  He's an old schooler who I've enjoyed for over a decade.  We entertained ourselves on the dance floor while slamming a couple rounds of jager bombs (bad idea).

Muh being Muh and John and some poor girl
I was totally exhausted by the time we left.  All and all, super successful night out with good peeps.  That's why I'm home in bed on a Saturday night
