Love is in the Air!

I have very exciting news on the home-front: My beautiful, wonderful, amazing, exuberant, magnificent (ok, I think you get the picture) mother announced that she is getting remarried!  It caught a lot of us by surprise, considering they've only been dating for a short period of time, but as it's been said before: When you know, you know.  So that being said, I am over the moon with excitement.  Just the thought of going wedding dress shopping for my mom gives me butterflies beyond belief.  She so deserves the love of a good man and has been patient over the past 12 years.  I always knew in my heart she would find what she was looking for.  So, it looks like they are planning for a mid-summer wedding.  I can't wait to hear how the details pan out.

We enjoyed a nice "engagement dinner" at Stone Creek Dining in Greenwood.  I enjoyed a wonderful dish of Pan Seared Scallops over Sweet Potato, Andouille Sausage Risotto and topped with a Watercress Citrus Salad - divine!

I loved seeing my brother and his family.  It is crazy how much my niece and nephew have sprouted over the past couple months.
My grandmother also got to join in with the celebration.   Love that woman!!

As my BFF always used to say, "I love LOVE!" and I couldn't agree more.  I am surrounded by the most amazing, loving people and it is the best feeling in the world.

New Year, New Additions! Our Newest Dog LUNA

2012 is rolling through with ease.  I have a renewed sense of energy (possibly just caused by an extreme case of caffeine jitters), a zest for getting back in the kitchen, and a larger family!!

I want to take a moment to introduce you to the newest addition to our family: LUNA!

Hello, sweet girl! Wish my dirty sneakers weren't in the background, grsh!
D and I had been contemplating expanding our starter family for months now.  Little Miss B seemed depressed and between our busy work schedules and (let's be honest) laziness, she wasn't getting the proper  exercise that she needed.  When we lived downtown we always said, when we get a house with a fenced in yard, we'll look into getting a second dog.  Then when we moved into our new home we started focusing on projects and the 2nd dog idea got pushed to the side.  Now, several months in, many of our projects have been checked off our list so we decided to look into it again.

Between D and I, we put in some serious man-hours surfing the web and looking at the local shelter websites.  I focused most of my energy on Indianapolis Animal Control.  They are filled to the brim with cats and dogs and sadly, they appear to be a fairly high-kill shelter (none of the animals seemed to have an intake date longer than a few months).  Because of this, their adoption fees are only $60 compared to the $125+ we'd seen elsewhere.

I went there on 4 separate occasions, both with and without D and Little Miss B to scope out the prospects.  It is so insanely sad walking through Doggie Death Row.  So many of these animals seem like they'd be the perfect Best Friend for any family while others look like they have lost hope and know their fate.  I could never work there because you'd eventually see me on an episode of Animal Hoarders.  I have to give many thanks and much admiration to the workers and volunteers that dedicate themselves to such a stressful and, oftentimes, tragic job.

Over the weekend, I finally convinced D to come look at some of the dogs I'd previously looked at.  We drove over there and I had him go walk through the kennels and narrow down the ones he liked to introduce to B.  The shelter staff member brought at 3 dogs out, one at a time, for a more personal meet and greet.  Although B seemed to get along with all of them, there just weren't *SPARKS*.  B seemed a bit overwhelmed and just plain over it when our final candidate was brought out.  Talk about saving the best for last.  She was a brilliantly, brindle-colored, one year old mutt, slightly bigger than B but similar in build.  They immediately hit it off, playfully romping around together outside.  Neither one had their hackles (we learned that's what the hairs on dogs' necks and spines are called) raised and they seemed to really enjoy themselves.  It was pretty much love at first sight for all parties involved so after lots of paperwork and a little bit of lecturing on how to integrate the new dog into our house, the four of us packed into my car and made our way home.

Transitioning a new dog into a household is a little nerve-wracking, especially when B has been our sole little princess for a while now.  I tried to listen to all the words of wisdom I've acquired from Cesar Millan over the years. Think: CALM ENERGY!

We've taken all the necessary precautions: separate food bowls and eating spaces, supervised play for the first few days, close observation of any aggressive behavior.  I couldn't have asked for a better circumstance between Luna and B.  The only sad part is that B is the submissive of the two dogs, which I had previously observed from taking her to the Broad Ripple Dog Park.  Luna is top dog: she decides which bed to sleep on; she enters/exits the house first; she herds B where she wants her.  It's just natural for dogs to assume their roles so we can't force nature.

Sisters!
Sleepy after some major playtime!
End of Day 1 (Thanks, D for this lovely picture)  This is seriously where I fell asleep

So, so far, so good.  Luna has only had one accident in the house (Day 1).  She is the biggest cuddler and the sloppiest kisser.  She has even managed to muscle and pout her way into sleeping in our bed (although we might have to nip that in the bud soon because she is a space-hogger).  FYI: 2 humans and 2 dogs in one queen-sized bed is a recipe for disaster and a guaranteed sleepless night.  That being said, I think D and I made the perfect choice.  I look forward to many rewarding and fulfilled years with, both, Little Miss B and Luna Girl!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU ARE THINKING OF GETTING A DOG OR A SECOND DOG, ALWAYS LOOK TO THE SHELTERS FIRST.  THESE DOGS ARE THE PERFECT COMPANIONS TO ANYONE.  PUPPY MILLS ARE THE SOURCE OF SO MANY PET STORES AND BREEDERS.  FYI, INDIANA HAS A SCARY-HIGH AMOUNT OF ILLEGAL, INHUMANE PUPPY  MILLS.  FORGIVE MY SERIOUSNESS BUT THIS IS A HUGE PROBLEM THAT CAN BE CONTROLLED AND STOPPED BY PEOPLE DOING THE RIGHT THING.

One more thing, in the famous last words of Bob Barker:

"DON'T FORGET TO SPAY AND NEUTER YOUR PETS"

The Ultimate Procrastinator: Happy 2012!!! (...4 Days In)

O-M-G! I am beyond disbelief that it is 2012! I'm officially 10 years out of high school and certainly not where I pictured myself, as a naive eighteen year old (definitely not a bad thing).  I have a feeling that 2012 is going to be pivotal and positive!  I am not a big fan of resolutions because, like the other 99% of the population, I have a difficult time keeping them.  My "goal" for this year are to refocus on my little, insignificant blog and take it more seriously (i.e. consistent weekly posts, custom domain name, emphasis on proper photography, utilizing social media to the fullest).

That being said, I'd like to show you a little recap of my holiday season....
  • It started with our beautiful gold and silver tree!  This was our first Christmas in the new house and we became all too aware of the fact that we are grown ups now.

Where are all the presents?

Silver and Gold!

  •  Football...lots and lots of football (and several a few tears)

Blue Crew Tailgate

  • I ate some insanely good food that, to my dismay, is starting to pop up in undesired places.  I need to remember: JAMAICA in August, JAMAICA in August, JAMAICA IN AUGUST!
Girls' Night Out at...
Sapporo in Castleton!
    Date night hibachi at...
Kabuto's on the south side
- Thanks to my awesome brother and sister-in-law's Christmas gift card, D and I had a kick ass meal at Bonefish Grill off of 86th Street.  Bacon Wrapped Scallops, Asian Glazed Sea bass, Filet Mignon & Crab cakes (my mouth is watering just thinking about it)

- I also recently tried 10-01 in Broad Ripple with *Fefe.  I love the downstairs lounge/bar.  I only nibbled on soup and salad and tried one of their seasonal ambers.  I'm definitely looking forward to returning to trial their full menu and beer list.

- FYI Devour Downtown starts in 5 days!!!
  • And most importantly, I had such an amazing time immersing myself with my wonderful family...
My adorable niece
My grandmother trying desperately to hold up my niece
My brother and beautiful mother
My wild man of a nephew

...and friends
Rock Lobster!
NYE!
and D!...
3...2...1! Happy New Year!

My Best Friend's Wedding

I cannot believe today is September 1st.  Where did the summer go?  Where did August go?  It was all a blur.  I was so consumed in wedding mania that I haven't had time to blog.  I've missed it.  But I'm back, so here's a recap from last weekend's wonderful soiree...

The Bride's beautiful wedding was perfect, held outdoors at The Historic Ambassador House and Gardens in Fishers, IN.

All of the bridal party got airbrushed make up done by Kathy Moberly of Faces by KLM.  She did a marvelous job.  We all (and most importantly The Bride) looked like movie stars.

I found the perfect photographer for The Bride: Jeff Dillow Photography.  He was the epitome of professional: creative, playful and insightful.  I can't wait to see the results.

The ceremony was beautiful but the reception is where all the fun was had....

The food was provided by Edwards Catering (Edwards Drive In).  It was served buffet-style including fried chicken, potato wedges, broccoli salad and these out-of-this-world dinner rolls.  No pictures but just imagine the perfect home-cooked meal and voila, there you have it.

The cake was made by Fefe's sister.  Beautiful!

As the Maid of Honor, I had to make a speech and toast the newlyweds.  I was so nervous but nothing a little bit of champagne and whiskey couldn't smooth over.

I am so happy for the two of them.  I wish them many years and years of happiness.  I might've lost my partner in crime but I've gained a friend (The Groom) and a special niece (their beautiful 1-year old daughter).  I love you, sister!

I am experiencing blogging withdrawal...

Uverse is coming by our new house sometime between morning and night  tomorrow to set up cable/internet at our new house!! Trust me, I have lots and lots to catch up on including the latest What I'm Eating, Chow Down Midtown, What I'm Cooking and of course, pictures of the new house.  Once I have access to the WWW, you bet your butt, I'm getting my blog on!

Oh, and along with Uverse, I have to wait for an HVAC company to come take a look at our broken AC! Starting off rocky but I'm confident we're going to shine through in the end!!

What I'm Eating: Revisit Alert! Napolese

I know that it's only been about a month since I gushed and praised my first experience at Napolese but I already made my way back over the past weekend.  I knew that I wanted to take D there so when date night came up, I instantly threw out the suggestion.  We decided to go there later in the evening since it was a Friday night.  Once again, it seemed like we snatched up the last available table because even past 9pm, they were packed.  We were nestled in an intimate 2-top table in between a group of 4 on my left and another couple on my right.  The interior space is very cozy with romantic, dim lighting and soft music.  I got a chance to soak in more of the inside details: a great corner wine bar, eat-up seating near the open kitchen and the intricate, decorative tiling around the wood-burning, brick oven.

We had the same server, Keri, who was just as warm and inviting as before.  She dropped off a variety of olives for us to nibble on. Yummy!  I ordered a glass of pinot grigio while D stuck with a beer.

Cheers
We debated on an appetizer but I decided I'd rather go with a dessert later on.  Their pizza comes with 6 exceptionally large slices so I knew that splitting one would be plenty of food for the 2 of us. We went with the Butler Tarkington Pizza (Italian sausage, red peppers and a basil-pesto sauce) although the Kessler Meridian was calling my name, too.  While we waited for the food, I asked D to do some stealthy undercover espionage by taking some pictures on his way to the little boy's room.  He reluctantly obliged.

This was the only non-blurry pic D took
When our pizza came, our eyes bulged and we licked our chops like 2 rabid dogs about to pounce!  Just look at this amazing pie....
Seriously?!
A close up on the toppings
This pizza was so complex in flavors.  There was spicy in the Italian sausage, sweet and roasted in the red peppers and fresh, earthy notes in the zesty pesto sauce.  To quote D: "This is the BEST pizza I've ever had."  I would have to agree with him.  Napolese's pizzas are genius.  Their robust flavors even hid the fact that the center of the pizza crust wasn't fully cooked through.  I ended up only eating 1 slice and D ate 3, leaving us with 2 slices for the road.

Leftovers!!
Their cobbler flavor of the night was the rhubarb and wild cherry again which was so tempting but I went with the chocolate gelato instead.  D was completely stuffed and I was too but I was craving a sweet night cap.

I think I closed my eyes to soak it in for a moment
This densely, rich cup of divine sweetness almost made me call it a night.  Anything else we would do would have been lacking in comparison.  I forced D to take a bite.  He had no regrets although did think it was a bit too rich.  I practically licked the bowl clean.

This was a celebratory dinner that went just perfectly.  I cherish these special times together and was so excited that he shared my love for this wonderful restaurant!  We had a round of drinks, a pizza and a dessert for about $40 (including tip)  Next on my list, Petit Chou!

The Verdict: Out of 5 stars

Location/Atmosphere: **** Perfect for date night or time with the family

Service: ***** Keri kicked butt, again!

Food:***** Best pizzas in town plus seriously sexy desserts

Will I eat there again:  OMG, YES! If Napolese made a no-fat/no-carb/no calorie pizza, I'd eat there every single day!

Happy Mother's Day!!!

Dear Mom:

You are the best mother a girl could ask for.  I admire everything about you: your class, your professionalism, your unwavering love for your family.  You are such a blessing in my life and the best part is that you chose me or maybe it was divine intervention.

Love,

Your daughter

What I’m Eating: Adobo Grill (downtown)

Not many places that I eat at create a special, nostalgic moment from the minute I step inside but Adobo Grill did just that.  Yesterday was one of my favorite days of the year: CINCO DE MAYO!  I’m not going to pretend I know the history of the Mexican holiday.  To me, it’s just a great reason to meet up with friends to enjoy Mexican food and of course, margaritas!

From August 2005 to May 2007, I lived in Atlanta, Georgia and had the privilege of working at Sala: Sabor de Mexico (sadly, no longer open); an upscale, regional Mexican eatery nestled in the wonderful Virginia-Highland area.  I shared some of the best memories of my life with my coworkers and I learned so much about Mexican food and drinks.  I observed attention to detail and the importance of sourcing the freshest, most in-season, regional ingredients.  It truly was an enriching experience.
But in Indiana, I very rarely come across equal craftsmanship of Mexican food.  I dined at El Torito which is no longer in business, a few years back, but was not impressed.  I had always known Adobo Grill existed, I just had not made my way there; always electing to go for the cheaper, greasier Americanized, Mexican fare at Cancun or La Hacienda.  But my buddy Kelly (a fellow downtowner) suggested it and I jumped at the opportunity.

We got there about 40 minutes before our 8:15pm reservation hoping to grab a drink at the bar and perhaps get seated early but were weren’t thinking very clearly because it was jam packed (duh!).  No big deal, we ran across the street to Fogo de Chao for a cocktail.  I ordered a Caipirinha on the bartender’s recommendation.  He sold it as being a Mexican cocktail, in lieu of Cinco de Mayo, but I knew better.  It’s actually a traditional Brazilian drink made with Cachaça run, muddled limes and cane sugar.  Very tart and zesty!  D and Kelly went with a margarita on the rocks.  We had to basically chug them once we got them because before we knew it, it was 8:15.
Adobo Grill is a fairly large, two-story restaurant with a long main dining area and several other dining rooms that splintered off from the center.  The decor is festive, bright and traditional.  The environment just screams fiesta!  In honor of Cinco de Mayo, a mariachi band was rounding the restaurant.  It was pretty loud when they were nearby but I enjoyed the entertainment.

Very animated Mariachi ban

We were instantly greeted with a basket of warm tortilla chips and salsa.  The salsa was fantastic.  It is not the typical fresh salsa that most people’s palettes are used to.  Theirs has smoky, roasted chipotle flavors.  Its heat comes on more slowly and kinda creeps up on you.  We quickly ordered a round of house margaritas and guacamole.  The server placed our margarita glasses on the table (I prefer my margs up/D and Kelly went on-the-rocks) and aggressively mixed the ingredients in a large shaker then poured.  Kudos on the service detail.  This is something that Sala did and really enhances the diners’ food adventure.  The menu and website said that it is made tableside but unfortunately they prepared it around the corner and out of sight.  I attributed this to how crowded the place was and the staff seemed a bit overwhelmed.  No worries though because the guacamole was out of this world.  A tad bit salty but the avocado was perfectly ripe and hand muddled with garlic, jalapeno peppers, onion, tomato, cilantro and a squirt from a lime wedge.  We basically licked the lava rock bowl it was served in clean.

Maybe the best guacamole in Indy

Found the tableside cart around the corner
The menu offers lots of wonderful choices that are prepared very traditionally like Oaxacan black mole and ceviches.  They use lots of regionally specific ingredients like huitlacoche and pasilla chilis.  I went with the Enchiladas de Marsicos (Seafood).  D went with the chicken enchiladas in a salsa verde.  Kelly chose the Tilapia a la Talla.  Our entrees came out in a timely fashion which was good because even after chips, salsa and guac, I was starving.  My (4) enchiladas were everything I was hoping for: cheesy, creamy, smoky.  The shrimp and tilapia was smothered in a corn and chipotle cream sauce and slices of grilled green peppers and onions then rolled in corn tortillas.  Melted cheese, guac, crema and pico de gallo were also sprinkled on top.  The corn in the sauce sweetened it but was balanced by the earthy roasted heat of the chipotle.  It reminded me of the seafood enchiladas that Sala served.  It also came with Mexican rice and black beans.  I was too focused on the entree to really analyze the sides.
adobogrill3
Mariscos Enchiladas = delicioso!
Kelly enjoyed her dish.  It was a filet of tilapia marinated in adobo chili and simmered in a guajillo broth and served with escabeche (pickled veggies).  As I sort of suspected, D’s chicken enchiladas were a bit mediocre which I think is pretty typical of dishes in a salsa verde.  He said it was good but no fireworks.  The shredded chicken was in a tomato and chili sauce that was very mild and lacked seasoning.  I ended up asking for a to-go box and took my 2 leftover enchiladas with me.

I was sad that I didn’t leave any room for dessert but this just gives me a reason to return.  I am glad I got to dine here before we move away from Downtown later this summer.  I am definitely going to miss the urban environment.  Adobo Grill es muy beuno!

Mi amor & mi amiga!

The Verdict: Out of 5 stars
Location/Atmosphere: ***1/2 The decor and building is unique and beautiful but the lack of parking is a challenge.
Service: ***1/2 (our server was really just an order taker but it was the busiest day of the year so I won’t hold that against them.  Loved the margaritas shaken tableside and the Mariachi band)
Food: ****1/2 (2 out 3 people loved their entrees, guac was a star)

Will I eat there again: Si!

What I'm Cooking: Impromtu Dessert Trifle

Last night I tackled my first attempt at cake balls (still a work in progress. Post to follow, shortly).  But I decided to use some extra cake scraps to make a scrumptious dessert.  This is what I came up with:

Mixed Berry Trifle

So blurry, sorry!
The artist in me had to come up with some design :)
I took the scrapings from the freshly baked cake and packed it down to make the bottom layer.

White Cake
Next, I added a layer of nonfat plain yogurt (1 cup).  It wasn't until now that I realized that I grabbed plain, plain yogurt instead of Greek yogurt at the grocery store (sad face).  I used a spoon to even out and smooth it around.

Finally, I grabbed about a cup of frozen, mixed berries and arranged them in a perfectly symmetric design.  Years of design school really paid off!  Beforehand, I microwaved the berries for about 20 seconds to soften.

TA-DA!!
This was so simple yet had everything I was looking for: sweet, fresh, tangy; without the guilt!  I was so proud that I had to share with D.  He loved it!
